Accountability
NPS is a national police institution, operationally distinct from the Interior Office and accountable through the policing arrangements established for the United Hampshire State.
Ministerial accountability
The Interior Office is responsible for central policing policy and the policy and sponsorship relationship with NPS. That relationship does not give ministers ordinary operational command. Ministers do not direct individual police investigations.
Operational accountability
The Commissioner is responsible for the direction and control of NPS and for lawful, effective and professional policing within its jurisdiction.
Independent conduct oversight
The Independent Office for Police Conduct provides independent police complaints and conduct oversight within its jurisdiction.
Inspection
The central police inspection function independently assesses NPS effectiveness, efficiency, legitimacy, standards, capability, safeguarding, readiness and governance within its jurisdiction.
Disciplinary appeals
The Police Discipline Appeals Tribunal provides an independent appeal route within its jurisdiction.
